Being new to crewel embroidery but addicted to books, as soon as I opened this book, it was love at first sight! I found this book immediately accessible with projects that are simple and beautiful. Beginners and experts will find this book inspiring and projects can be adapted and applied to many products.
Here’s my first attempt at one of the projects – I plan to mount this on canvas with a ribbon for hanging.
I stitched these designs in white onto red felt and made pillow ornaments. Lots of fun to make!
These use a pattern from Sew Pretty Christmas Homestyle and are made of felt with embroidery. I used stencils for the words ‘Joy’ and ‘Love’ and hand embroidered flowers using a variety of stitches – satin, oyster, stem, french knot, etc. I used a stamp pad with sand colored ink to make the white birds a bit antique-looking.
I love Therese Laskey’s The Softies Kit which inspired me to create this mini gingerbread house.
Here are more birds that I made following the spool sewing pattern. I used felt for the body and cotton fabric for the underside. I embroidered the front and added a bead for the eye.
Here are some mini birds that will make nice ornaments. I made poinsettia flowers using oyster stitches and french knots.
